There’s No Such Thing as a Professional Piece of Writing

You know what I still don’t get about writing?

When some fellow freelancers might say they are writing a “professional” blog post for X.

In no way am I knocking freelancing or anything like that. If you’re a freelance writer, writing is your profession and you should treat it as such. There’s definitely some professionalism involved when you prospect, sign clients, and get assignments, but what about the actual writing?

And I’m not talking about the fancy language you might use in your writing, but the essence of it.

Is it your writing or is it just a blank space with words on it?

What even is a “professional” piece of writing?

Let’s start off by defining what professionalism actually is. The dictionary definition of professionalism is the competence or skill required of a professional.

A professional is someone who is connected with a profession (writing in this case).

Whenever I think about professionalism, there’s a level of sophistication that’s always associated with it.
