A few months ago, I developed a habit that was detrimental to my writing.

Recently I’ve gotten myself out of this habit, but it took a lot of courage to resist.

This habit is…wait for it… is writing poems.

Cue the confusion.

I’ve always had a deep love for poetry when I was a little girl (and I still do). But there’s a reason why I haven’t written a poem in a long time and it’s not for the reasons you think.

They’re short but emotional.

One of the most convenient things about poetry is that it can be any length. It can be as short as a haiku to a whole book.

But I also loved poetry because it packs an emotional punch. It’s more abstract.

I could write straight from my heart without worrying if my thoughts are clear enough for others to understand. Poetry is made to be interpreted in different ways.

I wrote poetry everyday because I loved the creativity behind it. I even submitted a few poems I wrote to a few contests online (lost every single one).

But the point is that while poetry is a form of writing that I will always love and cherish — it didn’t help me in…
