Why now? What’s different this time?

Ever since I heard Trayvon’s killer, George Zimmerman get acquited, I thought there was no hope.

Soon after, the deaths of Mike Brown, Philando Castile, and Eric Garner followed. No results. Still no hope.

It’s sad. It makes me bawl my eyes out to know that if a black man in my family gets stopped by the police, they can be killed on the spot with no repercussions.

Throughout the years, I’ve tried my best to forget. Not forget the justice these victims deserve, but forget the tears I’ve shed because of the hard work my people put in day after day. Yet white people still have the nerve to ignore our voices.

That was until…the death of George Floyd.

The only good thing that came out of COVID-19.

I kept rerunning in my mind what was so different about this situation that sparked the overwhelming support for Black Lives Matter that I’ve never seen before.
