What a ride.

This has been a post in the making for a year. There have been a ton of ups and downs. I’m still flabbergasted I made it this long.

I still classify myself as a “halfway decent” writer because I’m nowhere near a Medium master. But I’ve figured out a few tricks along the way. So if you’re new to the platform and you’re struggling to make it past year one, here is everything I’ve learned and my results to get you through it.

Let’s go.

Here’s a bit of my story for context.

As I said before, I found out about Medium in 2018.

I’m still waiting for that album…Beyonce.

I have no idea how to start this off.

I guess I’ll start this off with…I came out of the womb.

Who am I?

This is the easy part where I give you a quick rundown of my bio. Here goes…

  • I’m a HUGE Beyonce Fan — I went to see her twice in concert and she resurrected me from the grave both times.
  • I play the saxophone and guitar — The guitar came and went. I played the saxophone for a solid six years and got pummeled in marching band. Anything to get out of P.E.
  • I love anime — The…

Or talent.

How do I say this without sounding like an old white dude?

I love that women have more freedom of their own bodies now. You see the sensuality of womanhood all over social media. I totally understand women empowerment and I do think most women have this mission.

However, the lines have been blurred between female empowerment and straight-up yearning for male attention.

I’m definitely NOT trying to tell women what to do with their bodies. If you want male attention and you’re using your sexuality to do so, I get it.

If you want to show your sexuality just…

Bad writing is a result of lazy thinking.

We have an endless supply of ideas when we write.

Coming up with new ideas every single day is its own challenge. Most people say the ideation process is the hardest part of being a writer. I agree, but we’re forgetting one crucial caveat.

The biggest challenge of being a writer is coming up with new ideas — that you are passionate about. That’s why half-baked thoughts are the biggest killers of writing.

Let me explain.

You can’t write a substantial article with half-baked thoughts.

I’ve done this countless times.

I’d come up with a few new ideas each day. I pick one that resonates the most. …

Including writing — and that’s okay.

Creating your own category is the easiest way to excel in any field you’re in.

Category creation is a term I got from one of my favorite writers, Nicolas Cole. His basic definition of category creation is knowing what levers to push and pull to garner an audience. In a nutshell, it’s about knowing what your audience likes and creating your own unique category that no one has made before.

This happens with the GOATs (greatest of all time) in any field.

Simone Biles created a new move that no gymnast has ever done before (calling it The Biles), at…

There’s no such thing as being “too young” to die.

Today I just found out I lost my aunt and a childhood friend.

I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this, or even how long the grieving process takes. But at least I feel a tiny bit better at night after finding a new way to think about death. So, if you’re struggling from the loss of a loved one, here’s a different perspective on death I’ve learned that I hope can help you as well.

Let me explain.

We’re all just flower pedals passing by in the wind.

I’ll never forget watching the show Thundercats (the revamped one in 2011) when I was a kid.

The series…

It’s getting weird.

I’m a huge believer that capitalism is the stain of the Earth. America, in particular, has the biggest wealth inequality gap in the world. In fact, the top 20% of Americans own 86% of the country’s wealth.

And it affects Black folks the most.

So I’m completely empathetic to the Black anti-capitalists who want to eradicate this problem. Black millionaires and billionaires benefit from this system.

However, when we talk about Black capitalists, we’re painting too broad a brush.

Let me explain.

Not all Black capitalists are show-offs on social media.

I think the constant flexing of black rappers and influencers on social media has left a bad taste…

Get ready to squirm.

I’m not going to spend this post dogging out the newer writers. This post is about problems that even I, someone who’s written articles every single day for a year, still face.

While I’ve made thousands of dollars with tons of engagement on my work, it’s still hard as hell to be a writer.

Mo money mo problems I guess.

So here are three grueling challenges you might face even after getting some writing experience and a little bit of success.

It’s Easy For Your Writing Quality to Decrease When You Find Some Success

Writing quality ebbs and flows if you’re not actively trying to improve. My writing quality this month is shit…

Use the power of language.

Negative Nancy has become my second name among my family.

Just today, my mom was having trouble getting our TV to work. She offered so many different suggestions and to be honest, I thought they were all stupid. I thought the TV was broken forever.

I thought people were being marshmallows. I always wondered why being blunt is always associated with being negative. Now I understand that it’s not what you say that bothers people — it’s how you say it.

Want to be more positive? Then it’s time to reframe your language.

The Power of Language is Nothing to Sneeze at

I once read an article in my…

I left this guy’s YouTube channel and never went back.

He’s a crazy successful entrepreneur. I binged his videos every day because I wanted to follow in his footsteps and build a six-figure digital marketing agency. I even bought his book.

I stopped watching him after he said in one of his videos that he makes 20k pounds a month, yet he outsources three Filipino workers and pays them one hundred or fewer pounds each.

He said, “they’re happy, so it’s fine.”

People are trying to cheat capitalism.

I find it weird when digital nomads justify their exploitation of workers by saying the workers are…
